Amstelveen Symphony Orchestra (AmSO)

The Amstelveen Symphony Orchestra is an amateur orchestra consisting of around 30 accomplished musicians and advanced amateurs supported by professional musicians.  The annual orchestra season includes at least two programmes performed at various venues in and near Amstelveen.  AmSO also plays concerts in nursing homes in Amstelveen.

Repertoire

AmSO performs a variety of orchestral music from the standard symphonic repertoire, including the classical and romantic to impressionist periods — for example, works by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák, Debussy, and Ravel have been featured recently.  Each programme features performances by esteemed soloists as well.

History

The AmSO was established on 28 January 1976 by an enthusiastic group of musicians who had played previously with the Schubert Orchestra.  Conductor history:  Kees van Hage was the first conductor (1976-1978) followed by Grzegorz Stasko (until 1990) then Saskia Boon led the orchestra until April 2013.   Hans Scheepers took the baton until November 2014, followed by Rutger van Leyden (2014-2020)

Virginia Cinelli

Concertmaster since 2021
Italian violinist Virginia Cinelli (Cairo, 1998) has a strong passion for the orchestral repertoire of the classical and early romantic eras. She currently serves as concertmaster for the Amstelveens Symphonieorkest. As a leader, Virginia aims to make her colleagues feel supported and safe.
Under the tutelage of Chris Duindam and Mara Oosterbaan, Virginia is working towards her Master of Music at the Fontys Academy of Fine and Performing Arts (Tilburg.) To complement her violin studies, Virginia is also researching the process behind forming a musical interpretation.
Working as a babysitter during high school fostered in Virginia an interest in teaching, as she enjoyed teaching the children little songs on the piano. Now, Virginia teaches her own violin students in the Amsterdam area.
Virginia enjoys traveling to festivals and masterclasses to meet peers and learn from different teachers. She particularly enjoyed traveling to Vittorio Veneto, Italy to study with M. Maria Caterina Carlini, as well as traveling to Boswil, Switzerland for a masterclass with Prof. Detlef Hahn.
With the goal of spending more time outdoors, Virginia has recently picked up roller-skating. Despite the many embarrassing falls and bruises, she finds satisfaction and tranquility in gliding through parks on a sunny day.
